When you open a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP), your child becomes eligible for government grants that will be added to your contributions and grow in your plan. These government grants can increase your investment by over 30%, and grow on a tax-deferred basis until they are withdrawn to fund post-secondary studies.
The Basic Canada Education Savings Grant will give you 20% on every dollar of the first $2,500 you save in your child’s RESP each year.
Children born on or after January 1, 2004 can be eligible for the CLB when the family receives the National Child Benefit (NCB) Supplement. The CLB consists of a $500 lump sum, plus an additional $100 per year until the child turns 15 years old for a lifetime maximum of $2,000.
Depending on your net family income, you could receive an extra 10% or 20% on every dollar of the first $500 you save in your child’s RESP each year.
